Storm runners – NOT chasers!

We left Abe’s RV Park in Oklahoma City on Monday afternoon, around 4pm.  A little later than planned, but work took a little longer for Allen.  Plus, we went to the races on Sunday for the last time, I celebrated pretty hard (with not enough food!) and I was paying for it on Monday! DIY Heated Water Hose

Making your own heated water hose is easiest when you don’t NEED it! When you have to make one in 20 degree, windy, snow, it’s no fun at all! (We’ve done that twice…) But this time we got smart about it! Continue reading

Operator won’t you put me on through…

I gotta send my ♥love♥ down to Baton Rouge…

We found out Friday that we need to be in Baton Rouge for work on Monday. It just so happens that “Callin’ Baton Rouge” by Garth Brooks is one of my all time favorite songs! So I’m sure Allen will be good and sick of it by the time we get there! Luckily for him, it’s less than 500 miles, so he will only have to deal with my musical selection and singing for one day…

We are avoiding Dallas, so it’ll take about a half hour longer, but it’s well worth it!

I always try to use the Good Sam Trip Planner, just so we don’t get taken into any RV-unfriendly places…

We should be in Baton Rouge for a few days, then I THINK we’ll be heading to Oklahoma City… If that’s the case we will be there by the end of next week. I don’t mind this plan at all!

I’ve never been to Baton Rouge. Our friend Doug, out at Candlestick RV Park in San Francisco, went to LSU and LOVES the tigers, so he will be thoroughly jealous!

I’m super hoping we can get some delicious crawfish… I love them so much… My mouth is already watering…

I’ve looked at the weather and it looks fairly warm. Rain on Tuesday but maybe that’ll give us time to see a little bit of the town (fingers crossed for a weather day!)

And then our friends Bob and Karen are at Abe’s RV Park in Oklahoma City so it’s always good to see them!

I found a campground right down the street from the tower site that I’m hoping works out for us. Water and 30AMP service only, but it’s only for a couple days so it shouldn’t be too bad, and they have a dump station. It’s at an equestrian park… I’m just hoping this little angel puppy of ours can behave herself and not act like a wild banshee the entire time we’re there!

Spoiled little Charles…

I’ll probably have to bribe her with treats… So if you’d like to help out with that, you can put some money in Charlie’s Treat Fund 🙂

Underbelly Overhaul!

After our not-so-excellent experience with a mobile RV tech, we decided this had to be done! When Allen and I put our heads together and work to make something happen, we usually rock it. (And if we want to kill each other along the way, at least we come out the other side still in love!) Continue reading

If it moves, it shakes….

And if it shakes it loosens… Such is life in our home on wheels…

Since we left North Dakota on Saturday we’ve discovered:

  • The low-point drain is busted. Broken. Stuck open.
  • Our bedroom slide is in need of service. It won’t close all the way.
  • Our gray and black tanks don’t close all the way, so when Allen (not me) removes the cap to hook the sewer hose up, all kinds of nastiness spills out. Every time.
  • The tank for the half bath in the garage won’t open to drain. It’s full. The handle pulls out. Nothing happens.

When we got to Abe’s RV Park last night, we parked and attempted to plug the busted water valve with no luck. So then we went out with Karen and Bob for some food, drinks, relaxing and catching up. Love them! Then today we got the truck tires balanced and rotated first thing this morning. I called 3 different McClain’s RV Superstores to try and get the camper in for lots of service but none could do anything until at least January.  I called Grand Design and spoke with “Jerry” yet again. He was not even remotely helpful.

We also want to have some other little things fixed while it’s still under our 1 year manufacturer warranty. But taking it to Grand Design is out of the question as “Jerry” told me today they aren’t scheduling any more service appointments and are backed up into February. Nice.

Allen was able to get the low point drain off and replace it with and elbow and more pex and a plug held together with lots of hose clamps. (All found at Lowe’s for a few bucks) So we at least have water. I did the manual override for the bedroom slide and got it in.

Now we’re on our way to Dallas and nothing is really fixed, just patched for now. No clue what we are going to do or when we can do it. I love traveling. I love living in a camper. I love the spontaneity of Allen’s job.  But when it comes to this kind of crap, it’s frustrating to say the least! But, we have each other, and Charlie, so we will deal with whatever is thrown at us and try and make the most of it!

P.S. I love Abe’s RV Park. It’s one of my favorite places, mostly because Karen & Bob are so nice and so helpful. I was a little sad to leave… On a good note: it’s in the 60s and feels like SUMMERTIME to us! I can’t wait to open the back and have a porch again!

On The Road Again

This is where I belong… On the road again.

Charlie is SO over the snow!

We pulled out of Hillsboro a few minutes ago, headed south on I-29, the direction we SHOULD be going for sure! It was actually hovering around 32 this morning and not too windy, so it almost felt like spring!

We are going to have to get our bedroom slide checked out soon. We are pretty sure the motor must be bad on it. Since we left San Francisco it’s been really slow coming in and out. We have to usually try it a few times with Allen pushing on the outside to help it. But this time it’s still out about a 1/2″ too far. Good enough to drive as long as we don’t hit a downpour. But, good thing it’s still under warranty with Grand Design!

Anyhow, we are headed for Council Bluffs, Iowa tonight. There’s a Horseshoe Casino with an RV park, and a bar with live music, so it should be fun! Tomorrow we are stopping in Oklahoma City at Abe’s RV Park to see our friends Karen and Bob – yay! Apparently a tower had some ice damage there so I’m hoping we can stay a few days… But either way, after that it’s on to the Dallas area to take down the tower at Fair Park that Allen worked on back in June.

I think Allen won the photo contest…

Thankful for Freezing Weather???

Never thought I’d say that! But I guess you learn from everything, so thankful I should be!

Here’s a timeline:

  • Wednesday night we hit Reno’s Sports Bar for some food and holiday shenanigans.
  • Got home and forgot to drip the faucet (even though our water hose is heated and insulated, it will freeze if it’s not dripping)
  • 4am Thanksgiving morning – woke up to a frozen water hose… Caught it in time, brought it inside, thawed it out. (It was only frozen at the connection point between two hoses, about a half inch was exposed with no insulation.)
  • Went back to sleep, with the faucet dripping!
  • Made a delicious Thanksgiving feast!
  • Black Friday: woke up to water in the kitchen sink and tub, and a frozen sewer hose!

    Frozen poop tube pieces…

What I’ve learned:

  • No matter how much fun, or booze, we have: REMEMBER TO DRIP THE FAUCET!
  • When the temperature drops to 2 degrees, or thereabouts, we shouldn’t be camping!
  • Or we should insulate the doggone poop tube as well…
  • One grey tank is for the kitchen sink, and one grey tank is for the bathroom and washing machine.
  • The grey holding tanks have no back-flow preventer, and will back up into both tanks simultaneously if they have nowhere to drain…
  • And finally, roaster ovens are the way to go when Cooking Thanksgiving Dinner in an RV!

Maybe I won’t have to use this cold weather knowledge for quite a while because we might be heading south sometime this week… This whole “getting dark at 4:45pm” is for the birds! Come on summertime!

No Shave November…

My mom got us these shirts!

Football and food…

I decorated for Christmas a tiny bit early!

Our “kitchen table” since our “dining room” is currently housing a Suzuki Katana!

Thanksgiving tradition that I’m keeping alive! Cheers!

And we will end with little Charlie…

Camping in 7 degree weather…

Who camps in 7 degree weather?!

Well, we do. The real question is: Who’s brilliant idea was it to work on a 2000′ tower in late November in North Dakota?? … Hmmm…

Allen is working all weekend since they were off almost all week due to crazy winds. We’ve been leaving the bathroom faucet trickling 24/7 so our water doesn’t freeze. He forgot to leave it running when he left this morning for work. I got up 2 hours later and caught it just in time! Crazy!

We even put a pillow over the spigot to kind of insulate it…  Our ghettoness is showing.

I’m just glad we have this camper (2015 Grand Design Momentum), our old one (2009 Forest River Wildwood) would be so much harder to keep thawed out! I thought Oklahoma City was bad last year… That was nothing compared to this!

More snow is on the way for Thanksgiving. Yippee!

I forgot to take my tape measure to the grocery with me today. I need a maximum 7″ high turkey to fit in our convection oven….

I wish we were in the Florida Keys…. !!! 🌴
